When you’re working on a video project, you need to figure out what type of video formatting you plan on using. Two main options are MOVs and Mp4s.
Some people never notice the difference between these video formats until they try to upload a video or open it in a video editing program and discover that they need a different video format. But what’s the difference? Which one should you choose?
Let’s talk about it. Keep reading to learn all about Mp4s and MOVs.
What Is Mp4?
An Mp4 is a type of digital container format. This means that it holds or encases a video for storage. It’s the most commonly-used file format for videos and it works well across all devices.
Mp4s tend to have small file sizes without sacrificing quality. This makes them appealing for posting on the web.
What Is MOV?
MOV is an Apple-specific file container for videos. It was created for the Quicktime video player, but you can also use it elsewhere (though not everywhere).
MOVs provide larger files and you have more flexibility about what goes into those files. They’re easier to edit than Mp4s.
Why Would You Choose One Video Format Over the Other?
So if both of these digital container file formats have their benefits, why would you choose one over the other when you’re deciding how to use your video?
If you’re a professional, or you’re looking for professional results, it’s going to be in your best interest to use a MOV, at least for editing purposes. The file size and video quality are great.
If you’re editing your video on an Apple device, MOV is the obvious choice. It works with Apple’s built-in software and you can always convert it to a different file format later.
Mp4 is a standard digital container, so it’s easier to use on common websites and social media apps. While you can upload both MOVs and Mp4s, you’ll often get better quality from the Mp4s because you don’t have to shrink the files to upload them.
What About Converting Videos?
So what happens if you already have an MOV but you need an Mp4? This isn’t a big deal. It’s easier than ever to convert file formats for video editing or uploading purposes.
When you convert MOV to Mp4, the file size will shrink. Sometimes this compression results in a reduction of video or audio quality, but with modern technology, the change shouldn’t be noticeable as long as you don’t compress the video more than 50%.
Always keep your original large MOV file for future editing purposes just in case you over-compress.
What Video Format Is Right for You?
The type of video format that you use doesn’t really matter because of how easy it is to convert it. That said, a general rule of thumb is that if you’re working on an Apple device, or if you need a large video file for editing purposes, MOV is a good choice. When you’re uploading your video to the web, try converting it to an Mp4 as long as you don’t lose quality.
