What are Wontons?

Among the different types of dumplings present in Chinese cuisine, one of the popular dumplings is wonton. In Northern China, Wonton is a traditional meal that was previously named as meat bun. There are different stories behind its origin. It is usually prepared with wheat flour dough, eggs, water, and salt. It also usually contains meat or pork that has been cut into smaller pieces and you can also sometimes find sea foods like shrimps in their filling. The wrapper of the wonton is very fine and smooth and it has a fresh filling that provides it the shape of a dumpling wonton. They are also used in various cuisines around the globe but they do not go with dipping sauce as they have a complete seasoned filling. They can be deep-fried, steamed, and boiled and usually come in a triangular shape. But it can be made in shapes like triangular, rectangle, and even square depending on the person who is making it.

Major Differences between Dumplings and Wontons

The major differences between dumplings and wontons are mentioned below:

  • The wrapper of dumplings is way thicker in comparison to wontons that have a thin and smooth wrapper. 
  • There are many different types of dumplings present in Chinese cuisine while wonton is a type of dumpling in Chinese cuisine. 
  • Dumplings can be eaten with or without a filling across the world whereas wontons are usually filled with meats, pork, and even vegetables. 
  • Dumplings go well with a dipping sauce as their filling which is generally lightly seasoned while wontons don’t go with the dipping sauce because their filling is completely seasoned. 
  • Dumplings are usually made in round shapes whereas wontons can be made in triangular, rectangle, and even square shapes.
