Dark Roast Coffee

Dark Roast coffees are dark brown, in fact almost black in appearance. Because of the drawn-out oil, the beans have a shine on the surface. Dark-roasted coffee has a rich, full-bodied flavor. The coffee’s qualities are nearly fully roasted away, leaving it with a robust, smokey flavor.

To be termed dark, beans must be roasted to a temperature of at least 440°F, or the end of the second crack. If the beans are roasted much hotter than 465 degrees, the coffee will begin to taste like charcoal. Many other large-batch roasters save money by roasting bigger amounts of beans faster at extremely high temperatures for a short period of time, thereby scorching their beans and destroying their taste.

Medium Roast Coffee

Brown in color, Medium Roast coffees have a little heavier body than Light Roast coffees. Medium, unlike Light, begins to take on some of the flavors of the roasting process, losing some of the bright flowery aromas that are characteristic of a Light Roast. Dark brown in color, Medium Roast coffee has a little fuller body than Light Roast coffee. Unlike light roast coffee beans, medium roast coffee begins to take on some of the flavors of the roasting process, diminishing the light roast coffee’s fresh flowery notes. Instead, they have a well-balanced taste and a moderate level of caffeine. A Medium is roasted until it reaches 410o–440o, right before the second crack.

Light roasts provide a more nuanced scent and flavor than medium-dark roasts. Some individuals believe they have less caffeine than dark-roasted beans. The various tastes inherent in their individual regions or varietals are retained in medium dark-roasted beans.

Common Things That Differentiate Medium Roast Coffee And Dark Roast Coffee

  1.  Medium roast beans are roasted for a shorter time than dark roast beans. They have a more robust flavor and lower acidity. The dark roasting technique also eliminates the coffee bean’s flavor, but many like it since it tastes stronger.
  2.  Dark-roasted coffee has a more nuanced flavor than medium-dark roast coffee. The various tastes inherent in their individual regions or varietals are retained in medium dark-roasted beans.
  3.  Dark roasts have a slightly bitter flavor and are less acidic than medium roasts.
  4.  Medium roast coffee beans have more moister than dark roast coffee beans, making them sweeter. They also contain somewhat less caffeine.
