Pineapple is one of the world’s most popular fruits. This fruit is even imported in most nations due to its sweet flavour and nutritional value. It is often utilised in baking and culinary dishes. While the terms Ananas and pineapple are occasionally used interchangeably, they are not synonymous.

Ananas
This is a plant genus of the bromeliad family endemic to Central and South America. It comprises the Ananas comosus species of pineapple. Carib natives introduced ananas to the Caribbean Islands. Its origins may be traced back to Mesoamerica. Christopher Columbus discovered it on Guadeloupe in 1493. The Portuguese then brought it to Europe from Brazil.
The roots of those words may be traced back to the early 1600s, when European explorers of the Americas carried the fruit to Europe, naming it pineapple owing to its similarity to a pine cone from conifer trees. However, unlike tomatoes, avocados, and bananas, the tropical fruit’s spread did not coincide with the term’s transmission.

The name ananas, on the other hand, derives from the Tupi word nanas, which means “good fruit,” and was documented in 1555 by André Thevet, a French Franciscan priest and adventurer (Mic, 2014). It is worth noting that Christopher Columbus discovered the fruit during his journeys and named it pia de Indes. This moniker, however, did not catch on outside of Spain and the Philippines. Commercial pineapple farms in the Philippines, Florida, Cuba, Hawaii, Southeast Asia, and the Dominican Republic helped to develop the species.

The usage of the terms ananas and pineapple has been a fascinating linguistic occurrence for decades over the world. While other languages call the fruit ananas or something similar, it is known as pineapple in English and pia in Spanish.
