With the COVID restrictions easing up in Chandigarh and other areas near the city, my cousins planned a trip to Manali to celebrate the New Year. When I heard of the plan, I jumped with joy and quickly packed for this much-awaited trip. We began our road trip to Manali by hiring a top rated car rental in Chandigarh with an experienced driver.
The only reason we planned for a road trip to Manali was to witness the mesmerising landscapes and pleasant weather. Upon reaching, I was bewitched by the beauty of this town; and let me tell you, Manali in person is way more enthralling than what we see in pictures and videos. After checking into our hotel, we went to explore this beautiful Himachali city.
Some of the top places we visited in Manali are as follows:
Hadimba Temple
Popularly known as the Dhungari Temple, this ancient shrine was constructed by Maharaja Bahadur Singh back in the 15th century. As the name suggests, the temple remains devoted to Hidimba Devi, wife of Bheema, second son of Pandava.
The wooden structure of the temple shrine is significantly different from most Hindu temples you come across in the country. Also, while roaming in the temple, we noticed another wooden shrine devoted to Hidimba Devi’s son, Ghatotkacha.
Encompassed by lush cedar forests and snow-capped cliffs serving as the stunning background, the temple is one of the most attractive locations to visit in Manali and to begin your New Year with god’s blessings.
Solang Valley
Solang Valley is a mini canyon situated approximately 8400 feet above sea level and is a quick drive from Manali. This place is a haven for sports and adventure lovers like me and, once we reached, we tried our hands at skiing and went for a snowmobile exploration. After an enjoyable skiing experience, we went paragliding to witness some breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas.
Jogini Waterfalls
After our fun-filled adventure activities at the Solang Valley, we visited the famous Jogini waterfalls. The flowing gushes of Jogini Falls are a short and refreshing trek away from the main Manali town. The trail that leads to the waterfall is picturesque and offers a breathtaking peek of the River Beas and the snow-topped mountains of Rohtang.
Apart from the serene backdrop, Jogini is also a great pilgrimage site, and you can tour numerous ancient shrines near the reservoir at the bottom. My advice to all the visitors is to camp in nature’s lap near the Jogini waterfalls to enjoy bonfires and stargazing at night.
The Manali Gompa
The elaborate structure and the superior Tibetan architecture make this Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa, more commonly known as the Manali Gompa, one of the most alluring landmarks in Manali. Constructed by Tibetan refugees in the 1960s, this monastery lets you experience tranquil surroundings and unparalleled spiritual vibes.
Also, when we visited this place, we got mesmerised by the captivating murals that represent significant events of Buddhism in dazzling hues and ceilings built in the Pagoda style. The stalls in the premises are an excellent spot to pick up some Tibetan handicraft items and souvenirs.
As it’s time to say goodbye to another year, we cannot be more thrilled. If you are planning a fun-filled New Year getaway near Chandigarh with your family and friends, I recommend Manali. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, and take a memorable roadtrip to the hill town. The Chandigarh to Manali taxi fare is super affordable and the views along the way are breathtaking!
