Sambalpur is the sixth most populous city in Odisha, India. It has a population of 335,761 people and is located on the banks of the Mahanadi River (as per 2011 census). There have been prehistoric settlements discovered there. It’s the birthplace of the Sambalpuri Saree.
Sambalpur gets its name from the Goddess Samalei, who is the region’s presiding divinity. From ancient times, the region in which Sambalpur city is located was also known as Hirakhanda. It was also called as “Sambalaka” in the past. It was known as “Sambalak” by Claudius Ptolemy.
