What is Relish?

Relish refers to a variety of sauce that can be served with plain food whose main purpose is to improve the flavoring. Traditionally, the main aim of relish was to preserve leftover vegetables to be used later during winter. Often, it contains chopped vegetable pieces, vinegar, lemon juice and salt. Sometimes, it may also contain certain spices such as dill seeds, mustard, turmeric, curry powder and chili. In the US, relishes are mostly served with burgers and sandwiches. There are certain varieties of relishes that are mostly sour rather than sweet and may involve addition of fruits. This is usually preserved before it is presented for eating. With long life spans, relish can be stored for even a month.  

What is Chutney?

Chutney is a thick paste like sauce that is mostly made of fruits and spices. Originated in India, the basic chutney recipe includes fruits, nuts, and vinegar or lemon juice with spices such as coriander, ginger, garlic, cumin, cardamom and tamarinds. With a smooth texture, chutney contains the grinding of different types of vegetables and fruits into a paste. It is often eaten with different curries and sandwiches. Also, it can be served as a dipping sauce for meats or on rice and potatoes. Chutneys are most commonly made out of mint and coriander in Indian region. Some chutneys are also made of coconut in the southern parts of India. Other famous chutneys include chili chutney, onion chutney, tomato chutney and many more.   

Difference between Relish and Chutney

  • Definition – Relish is defined as a pickle sauce that can be added to plain food to improve the flavor whereas chutney is a really spicy sauce made of mostly fruits, sugar, spices and vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Consistency – Relish sauce may or may not be chunky in consistency. On the other hand, chutney is much softer in texture and less chunky in consistency.  
  • Preparation – Chutney involves a slow-cooking process whereas relish consists of firm vegetables that can be slightly cooked or raw.
  • Ingredients – Chutney contains mostly fruits while relishes are mostly made of vegetables.
  • Origin – Chutney is originally from India and has been used for centuries as a side dish cuisine whereas relish is originally from England and is more recent than chutney.
  • Spices – Chutney contains several spices and relish may or may not have spices.
  • Taste – Chutney is often sweet and sour but relish has a tangy sour taste.
  • Serving and storage – Relish is often meant to be stored long as it can last much longer than chutneys that are served when fresh.
