Due to their long shelf-life and thick skin, many restaurants are fond of preserving grape tomatoes but they have a little water content and less sweetness therefore, chefs are less likely to use them in recipes where stuffing is desired. Key differences between grape and cherry tomatoes

  1. Description – Grape tomatoes are small in size and resemble the shape of grapes. They have a thicker skin and an oblong shape. On the other hand, cherry tomatoes are bigger than grape tomatoes and resemble the shape of an actual cherry.
  • Contents – Grape tomatoes have less water content and are less juicy and sweet while cherry tomatoes have too much water content in them. Either grape or cherry tomatoes, both are rich in lycopene, Vitamin A and C.
  • Use in recipes – Due to sweetness and juiciness, cherry tomatoes are commonly used in recipes.
  • Shelf-life – Cherry tomatoes are thin and more watery but they have a short shelf-life while grape tomatoes have a longer shelf-life. That’s why shop owners like to produce more grape tomatoes than the cherry ones.  
  • Growth pattern – Cherry tomatoes grow spaced on the pine tree whereas grape tomatoes grow in clusters like grapes.
  • Colors – Grape tomatoes are only available in a red color on the other hand, cherry tomatoes are available in yellow, red and orange.
