Difference between Non - GMO and Organic

In this blog we are going to tell you about Difference between Non – GMO and Organic, so read this blog carefully to get the complete information.

Introduction

One of the best examples of genetic engineering is GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) which are used in the production of food for consumption. For GMOs, biologists remove one or more genes from the DNA of one organism and recombine them into the DNA of other organisms to alter the traits associated with the genes. It actually helps to enhance the performance of the genetically altered organism to achieve its full potential. Later, scientists and environmentalists have discussed the potential health risks associated with GMO-labeled foods thus consumers started demanding non-GMO food products that do not contain any genetically modified ingredients.

What is Non-GMO?

Non-GMO refers to organisms that are not genetically modified and non-GMOs are the food products that are made without the ingredients derived from the genetically engineered organisms. In recent years, non-GMO foods have become a healthy trend among people.

What are Organic products?

Organic refers to the food products that purely work with nature and environment. It is an earth-friendly way of producing food. There are many kinds of organic food such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, packaged foods, grains, meat and many more. All the organic products are grown naturally without any harmful chemicals, artificial flavors, pesticides, preservatives and other additives.

Difference between Non-GMO and Organic

  1. Meaning – Non-GMO refers to non-genetically modified organisms which are grown conventionally. Organic refers to the food products whose ingredients are organically grown without man-made pesticides, fertilizers, growth regulators and other artificial additives.
  • Label – The Organic label in the food products means the product contains 100% organically produced ingredients which are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. It helps to best protect the quality of the soil and ensures the food has been produced through USDA-approved methods. Food products labeled as “Non-GMO” are not necessarily the same as certified organic labeling.
  • Health Benefits – Organic food products are grown and produced naturally using environment-friendly methods of farming and are obviously less harmful to the environment than conventional methods of farming that use different types of chemicals. These products taste better and fresher than non-organic foods due to absence of any preservatives or artificial flavoring agents and other chemicals. Non-GMO foods are also a healthy alternative, which improve overall fitness levels because of the antioxidants and absence of genetically modified organisms.
  • Purity – USDA-certified organic is the seal of purity which measures everything from soil quality. Also, it uses additives to pest control and quality control. The organic label assures the products have been manufactured within the USDA-approved guidelines and consist of 95% or more organic ingredients. People like to prefer certified organic foods as they do not contain synthetic herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, petroleum-based fertilizers and growth-altering hormones. The Non-GMO labeling does not guarantee non-GMO foods that they are 100% free of GMO.

Final words

It is always important to know the ingredients on the packaged food before buying and it is a wise decision to choose organic foods over GMO foods. Non-GMO foods are healthier to eat than their GMO counterparts. If the labeling is not clear then both non-GMO and organic food items are mostly indistinguishable from other food products in different ways.
